Octavia Spencer Confirms Interest In Ma 2 Sequel, Blumhouse Says It’s In Development

Octavia Spencer is ready to pour another round of her signature crazy. And this time, she really means it.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Spencer dropped a bomb fans have been waiting to hear: she’s “absolutely” down to return as the twisted, terrifying Sue Ann in Ma 2.

Yes, you heard that right. The Oscar winner is totally game for a sequel to 2019’s cult-favorite horror flick Ma, and she’s not just playing it coy.

“I love that character,” she told ET. “I would play her every day if I could.”

And guess what? Blumhouse boss Jason Blum is in on it, too. According to IndieWire, the powerhouse producer behind hits like Get Out and The Purge wants a sequel — and he’s been working to make it happen.

“We are working on it,” Blum confirmed. “Ma 2 is in development. We’re cooking it up.”

Ma wasn’t your average slasher. It was weird, darkly funny, and totally unhinged — just like Sue Ann, the lonely vet tech who lures teens into her basement for boozy hangouts… and then slowly loses it. By the end, she’s fully gone off the rails. And somehow, viewers were into it.

Despite a lukewarm box office ($61 million globally on a $5 million budget, per Box Office Mojo), Ma blew up online and found new life on streaming, with fans begging for a follow-up. Spencer even joked about becoming a “horror queen,” and at this point, she might as well claim the title.

And director Tate Taylor? He’s back on board, too — or at least he’s ready. In a 2020 Entertainment Weekly chat, he revealed he already cooked up a wild storyline for a potential sequel, describing it as “completely batshit crazy.”

Now, five years later, it looks like the band’s getting back together.

But don’t expect Ma to play nice this time. Spencer hinted her character could go even darker in a sequel — and yes, that’s somehow possible.

“She’s complicated,” Spencer said. “I like that. You don’t get to play women like that often.”

She’s not wrong. Most horror villains don’t come with backstories that make you wince and weirdly sympathize — then freak out five seconds later.

No word yet on when filming starts or who else is returning, but this train is officially rolling. Ma’s house might be burned to the ground, but Sue Ann? She’s just getting started.
