India’s 5G expansion set to reach 77 crore users by 2028, as per Nokia’s latest report.

New Delhi: Telecom equipment company Nokia said on Thursday that the average 5G data consumption per user per month in India has reached 40 GB. Over the next three years, the total 5G customer base is expected to grow 2.65 times to around 77 crore.

According to Nokia’s annual Mobile Broadband Index (MBiT) report, combined data consumption from 4G, 5G, and other networks grew at an annual rate of 19.5% over five years, reaching 27.5 GB in 2024. The report also stated that in 2024, 5G data usage across India saw a remarkable threefold increase on a yearly basis.

While presenting the report, Sandeep Saxena, Head of Technology & Solutions (Mobile Networks) at Nokia India, said that in December 2024, the average 5G data consumption per user in India was recorded at 40 GB. “We estimate that the 5G user base will grow from 29 crore in 2024 to approximately 77 crore by 2028,” Saxena added.

Nokia stated that in 2024, 5G data usage across India experienced an annual threefold increase.

The report highlighted that the continuous growth of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) is driving data usage. FWA users are now consuming 12 times more data compared to average mobile data users, driven by new services in both residential and commercial sectors.

Saxena further mentioned that the number of active 5G devices doubled year-on-year, reaching 27.1 crore in 2024, and is expected to grow further.
