He had to fight against the so-called technical flaws, was typecast, and, within months of becoming a World Cup hero, his contract was revoked. However, Shreyas Iyer remained steadfast, trusting his honesty and composed mindset to move forward. His perseverance paid off. Over time, he became India’s most reliable batsman at the No. 4 position. A few days ago, after India’s Champions Trophy victory, captain Rohit Sharma called him a “silent hero.”

When asked about his perceived weakness against short-pitched deliveries, Shreyas told a news agency, “Perhaps a perception was created, or I was typecast. But I always knew my strengths and capabilities and had confidence in myself. In my last eight ODIs at No. 4, I have averaged 53. The game keeps evolving, so a player must continuously improve their performance. I’m happy that I could play with a positive mindset and trust my process. I believed that my honesty and performance would earn me another opportunity.”

Last year, he suffered a back injury during the home Test series against England, which led to the loss of his central contract. At that time, he was training with his then-IPL team, Kolkata Knight Riders, when he was expected to play in the Ranji Trophy.

Under Shreyas’ captaincy, KKR won the IPL, and he made his way back into India’s ODI squad. This IPL season, he is set to captain Punjab Kings. Speaking about his journey, Shreyas said, “I kept my process simple. I didn’t overthink and continued to work honestly. I believed that my honesty and performance would earn me another opportunity.”
