Ana De Armas’ Ballerina Struggles With Soft Box Office Opening (IMG SOURCE: INSTAGRAM/ana_d_armas)
Ana de Armas may be packing heat in Ballerina, but her John Wick spin-off is slipping on the numbers front.
According to Deadline, the much-hyped Lionsgate action flick was once projected to kick off with a stylish $35 million domestic debut. Now? Industry insiders suggest it might tap out early — somewhere in the $25 million range.
Ouch.
That’s not exactly what fans — or studio execs — had in mind for a franchise that usually barrels through the box office like a freight train in full kill mode. Especially when you consider John Wick: Chapter 4 dropped in with a thunderous $73.8 million opening weekend in March 2023.
Even with Keanu Reeves cameoing as Wick (yes, he’s back in black), it seems Ballerina is twirling a little too gently into theaters.
To be fair, this isn’t on Ana de Armas. The No Time to Die and Blonde star reportedly trained like a machine for the role, which sees her avenge her family with all the ballet-gone-brutal flair the franchise is known for. But even a fierce lead and stunt-heavy action might not be enough when audiences are dealing with spin-off fatigue and a crowded release calendar.
Lionsgate, however, is staying cool. The studio hopes Ballerina will have legs — pun fully intended — beyond opening weekend. International rollout, streaming rights, and franchise expansion could still make this dance profitable.
Still, a box office miss this early isn’t exactly the graceful landing they were hoping for.
Ana de Armas might’ve nailed the choreography. But if the numbers keep slipping, Ballerina could be taking its final bow sooner than expected.
