Donald Trump Jokes About Becoming Pope, Sparks Reactions With Ai Image
Did Donald Trump just throw his mitre into the papal ring?
Not quite. But the former president sure made headlines after posting an AI-generated image of himself dressed in full papal gear—gold-trimmed robes, red slippers, the whole holy getup—on his Truth Social account.

“Number one choice,” Trump quipped, referring to the papacy while speaking at a recent rally in Michigan. The line, like much of Trump’s schtick, was classic deadpan-meets-provocation. The image? A surreal, AI-dreamt Vatican fantasy.
Cue the outrage.
According to NDTV, Trump’s post came just hours after Pope Francis’s funeral—a timing that many online called “disrespectful” and “grotesque.” Hindustan Times also pointed out the backlash, with users accusing Trump of mocking the Catholic Church during a solemn moment.

So is Mockery of Religion is okay when Trump does it?

Only those who worship the pope are offended. Worshiping the pope is blasphemy. Him posting this picture is no different than any other costume.

If the image wasn’t enough, Trump went further by endorsing New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan for Pope, calling him “a terrific guy” who’d “clean things up in Rome.” Financial Times was quick to note that Dolan, a conservative voice within the Church, isn’t exactly high on Vatican insiders’ list of frontrunners. His alignment with Trump’s politics might not do him any favors with the more globally balanced College of Cardinals.
Then came the punchline of all punchlines.
Senator Lindsey Graham, with a straight face only a seasoned politico can pull off, told People magazine: “The conclave should keep an open mind. Trump might surprise us.”
Sure, Lindsey. And maybe Kanye will run the UN.
Let’s be clear: Trump’s not Catholic, has never held a clerical position, and the Vatican doesn’t allow outside nominations. But that hasn’t stopped the internet from doing what it does best—turning chaos into memes.
Still, this isn’t just a punchline-ridden news cycle. The actual papal conclave begins May 7, with 133 cardinals casting votes. Real contenders include Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, per New York Post.
Trump attending Pope Francis’s funeral alongside other world leaders wasn’t entirely surprising. But his post-funeral antics? Classic Trump. Mix in some AI art, political jabs, and a sprinkle of religious satire, and you’ve got the latest headline stew only 2025 could serve.
Will Trump be Pope? No.
Is this the most Trump thing he’s done this month? Absolutely.
