U.S. to impose 104% tariffs on China, Effective from Today
The US and China have now come face to face over tariffs. The United States on Tuesday announced a total of 104 percent tariffs on China. The new U.S. tariffs on China will take effect on April 9. The White House gave this information.
China on Tuesday hit back at US threats to impose additional 50 per cent tariffs, saying it is ready to fight to the end if the US is bent on waging a tariff war or a trade war. A few hours ago, President Xi Jinping also said that the Chinese economy is a sea, not a pond. The storm may overturn the pond, but never the sea.
Tariff collection will start from April 9
White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt confirmed on Tuesday that the 104% tariffs imposed on China will take effect at 12 noon (EST) today, as China failed to remove its 34% retaliatory tariffs by the deadline. Tariff collection will start from April 9.
Earlier on Monday, Trump threatened to raise existing tariffs on China to 50% on Wednesday if Beijing does not remove its retaliatory tariffs on US goods by Tuesday. On the same day, Trump said China would face a 12 p.m. deadline to remove its tariffs. Beijing, on the other hand, vowed that it would not scrap its 34% retaliatory tariffs.
US-China trade
According to PTI, the total merchandise trade of the US with China in 2024 was about $582 billion, making it the top trader of goods with the US. The deficit in goods and services trade with China in 2024 was between $263 billion and $295 billion. About 70 countries have shown interest in starting tariff negotiations with the US, signalling a global effort to strike new trade deals, the White House has said.
