People were evacuated from the building and police closed off a significant section of Wellington Street in front of Parliament Hill, which also closed off routes to traffic and pedestrians.
Locked up for hours
More than three hours after the lockdown began, police set up a cordon from Wellington Street to Sparks Street, a block back. Police officials say the circumstances of the incident were suspicious, but they provided little information about what was happening inside. Ottawa police called in special forces, including at least the dog squad and bomb squad.
