
The death toll from last week’s devastating earthquake in Myanmar has risen to more than 2,000. This was reported by state media on Monday.
Hundreds of Muslims praying in mosques during the holy month of Ramadan were killed in the quake and 270 Buddhist monks were killed when a monastery collapsed, rescuers and an aid group said.
Aid groups and the United Nations have warned that the quake could lead to hunger and disease outbreaks in the country.
A 7.7 -magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread damage in the capital Naypyitaw and the country’s second-largest city Mandalay, among other places.
Tun Kyi, a member of the steering committee of the ‘Spring Revolution Myanmar Muslim Network’, said on Monday that due to the 7.7 -magnitude earthquake that hit Myanmar during Friday prayers, more than 700 people died in various mosques. About 60 mosques were damaged or collapsed due to the quake, Tun said.
Myanmar’s state-run MR TV reported that Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the leader of the military government, told Pakistan’s prime minister in a phone call that 2,065 people had been killed, more than 3,900 wounded and about 270 people were missing.
The World Health Organization said it was aware of three hospitals destroyed and 22 partially damaged in the area.
