Pope Francis leaving Gemelli Hospital after recovering from pneumonia.
Rome: Pope Francis was discharged from the hospital on Sunday after recovering from pneumonia and returned to his residence in the Vatican. When his convoy arrived at Vatican City, a tube was seen in his nose to assist with breathing. A crowd of people stood on the streets to welcome him.
On his way home from Gemelli Hospital, Pope Francis’s convoy made a brief stop at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, where he traditionally prays after returning from foreign trips. However, it was unclear whether he stepped out of the car or not.
Earlier in the day, Pope Francis appeared in public for the first time in five weeks and blessed the people from the hospital balcony. When the 88-year-old Pope was brought to the main entrance balcony of Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, he greeted the gathered crowd. Hundreds of people had assembled since Sunday morning to catch a glimpse of him.
Pope Francis had been hospitalized for the past 38 days due to a severe pneumonia infection in both lungs. He was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on February 14 after experiencing worsening bronchitis, which later developed into a serious pneumonia infection.
