Makarand Deshpande on the set of Guzaarish, recalling a memorable scene filmed in one take.
Many times, actors provide suggestions on set that are different from the words written in the script, making a lasting impact on the entire film.
In the 2010 film Guzaarish, starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, actor Makarand Deshpande did something similar on set. He played the role of Aishwarya’s character’s husband in the film.
Makarand shares his experience: “I had two shots in the film—one where I enter through the door and another where I talk to Hrithik. My first shot was about to begin when I asked the team if there was a flower or a bouquet available.
When this reached Sanjay Leela Bhansali, he asked why I needed a flower in this scene. I explained that my character is coming to meet Aishwarya. He is a bad person, but he is still human, so he would bring a flower. Sanjay agreed.
The shooting was delayed by 45 minutes for the flower. Once it arrived, discussions began about what would happen in the scene. At that moment, we decided to shoot the entire scene in one take.
Everyone was ready for it. You won’t believe it, but the entire scene was filmed in a single shot. Later, someone suggested taking another shot for safety. Hearing this, Sanjay turned around, glared at them, and said, ‘This shot is perfect. Pack up.'”
