The Miss World (World Beauty) pageant is being held in India for the second consecutive time. During the grand announcement on Thursday, the reigning Miss World, Christina Piskova, mesmerized everyone as she stepped onto the stage wearing a saree. Last year, the Miss World competition was held in Mumbai.
This year, the 72nd Miss World pageant will be hosted in Telangana from May 7 to May 31. Contestants from 140 countries will compete based on their skills and personalities to claim the prestigious Miss World crown.
The event was inaugurated in Telangana’s capital, Hyderabad, in the presence of Miss World Christina Piskova, Miss World Organization Chairwoman Julia Morley, Telangana’s Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao, and Telangana’s Tourism Secretary Smita Sabharwal.
On this occasion, Christina expressed her excitement about wearing a saree.
“My sister gifted me a saree, which she brought for me from India to the Czech Republic. I always wanted to wear it, but I didn’t know how to drape a saree properly. When I arrived in Telangana, I decided to experience Indian culture by wearing traditional attire,” she said.

Government’s Clarification on Expenditure
Recently, the Telangana government faced criticism from the opposition regarding an alleged expenditure of ₹200 crore on the Miss India competition.
Addressing this concern, Telangana’s Tourism Minister clarified that the Miss World Organization and the state government have a contractual agreement, under which the total cost of the event is ₹54 crore. Out of this, the government will bear ₹27 crore, while the remaining amount will be covered by the Miss World Organization. Additionally, the government aims to raise a significant portion of its share through sponsorships.
Smita Sabharwal, Secretary of the Tourism Department, stated in an exclusive interview that aspiring contestants should take part in the Miss World pageant.
She highlighted that this year’s competition will feature 140 contestants, including 20 professional doctors, engineers, and lawyers. She encouraged young women to dream big, set meaningful goals, and work hard to achieve them.
