Indian student Badr Khan Suri detained in the US for alleged ties with Hamas
A Narq America student of Indian origin has been detained in the US for allegedly spreading Hamas propaganda and maintaining close ties with a terrorist linked to the organization. He will be deported from the US. The detained student, Badar Khan Suri, is married to Mafez Sah, a Palestinian-origin US citizen. Suri was also a student at Jamia Millia University.
This incident comes shortly after another Indian student, Ranjan Srinivasan, had his visa revoked for supporting Hamas. Following this, the student voluntarily deported himself from the US on March 11.
A spokesperson for the US Department of Homeland Security stated that Suri has close ties with a suspected terrorist who serves as a senior advisor to Hamas. Suri is accused of spreading Hamas propaganda and promoting anti-Semitic sentiments on social media.
Postdoctoral Fellow Badar Khan Suri’s Background
Suri, a postdoctoral fellow in the US, is married to a Palestinian-origin citizen. He completed his PhD from Jamia Millia University in Delhi. The authorities claim that his activities warrant deportation.
Suri’s lawyer, Hasan Ahmed, has argued that his client is being punished merely because his wife is of Palestinian descent. Suri is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, where he is associated with the Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding.
According to the digital newspaper Politico, US federal immigration officers detained Suri amid ongoing crackdowns on students opposing US foreign policy. He was on a student visa, engaged in research and teaching. Federal agents, dressed in plain clothes, apprehended him outside his home in Virginia on Monday night.
Hasan Ahmed further stated that Suri has no criminal record. He has been taken to a detention center in Virginia and may be transferred to a detention facility in Texas.
