Trump and Putin in a crucial meeting over the Russia-Ukraine war ceasefire.
- Russia-Ukraine War • No Concrete Outcome from Much-Awaited Trump-Putin Talks
- Trump’s Diplomatic Maneuvers Fail, Putin Unmoved on Ending the War
During his U.S. presidential campaign, Donald Trump had promised to end the Russia-Ukraine war. He claimed that if he were president, the Ukraine war would never have started. However, Trump has faced a diplomatic setback in his attempt to broker a ceasefire with Russia.
The highly anticipated meeting between Trump and Putin resulted in little more than an exchange of prisoners and a vague promise for further discussions. Putin prolonged the talks without giving Trump any definitive answers. Trump had assumed he could persuade Putin, but he failed in his first major diplomatic effort.
During the nearly two-and-a-half-hour-long discussion, Trump urged a 30-day halt to the war. However, Putin only agreed to cease attacks on energy infrastructure. Within hours of the talks concluding, Russia launched drone strikes on 45 locations in Kyiv.
Trump had called for an unconditional ceasefire, but Russia imposed limitations. Moscow also demanded restrictions on foreign aid and intelligence sharing. The U.S. suggested using satellites to monitor the ceasefire, but Russia rejected the proposal.
Putin Will Not End the War, as It Would Put Him in Crisis
According to a special report by Dainik Bhaskar, Russian President Vladimir Putin will not end the war because it is crucial for his political survival. If the war ends, he could face severe political and economic challenges.
For Putin, the war has become a tool to maintain control over Russia and suppress dissent. The ongoing conflict has also reshaped Russia’s economy, benefiting the military and defense industries. Additionally, the war has supported economically weaker regions of Russia.
If the war were to end, Putin could face dissatisfaction from experienced soldiers, which would be a significant challenge for him. To maintain his grip on power, Putin continues to deepen divisions within the opposition.
Ukraine Will Not Participate in the U.S.-Russia Talks in Riyadh: Zelensky’s Aide
Following Trump’s meeting with Putin, Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke on the phone for an hour. Meanwhile, in Kyiv, Zelensky’s aide Mykhailo Podolyak stated that Ukraine has no plans to participate in the U.S.-Russia bilateral talks scheduled for Sunday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Despite the 30-day ceasefire proposal, Putin’s strategy remains focused on creating a rift between Ukraine and the U.S. His plan includes keeping economic relations with the U.S. separate from the Ukraine issue, making it clear that his goal is not peace but the continuation of war.

The judge ruled that the government must either provide the required information or justify withholding it on national security grounds.
