U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin hold talks on a possible Russia-Ukraine ceasefire.
Amid efforts to end the Ukraine war, U.S. President Donald Trump will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. This step could be a potential turning point in the conflict and an opportunity for Trump to reshape U.S. foreign policy.
President Trump informed reporters about this while traveling from Florida to Washington aboard Air Force One (the aircraft used by the U.S. President) on Sunday evening. Trump said, “We will see if we have something to announce by Tuesday. I will speak with President Putin on Tuesday.” He added, “A lot of work has been done over the weekend. We want to see if we can end this war.”
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Monday morning that the two leaders were scheduled to talk on Tuesday. However, he refused to provide further details, stating, “We do not comment on events beforehand,” and “The subject of discussions between the two presidents is never a matter of prior discussion.”
European allies remain concerned about Trump’s admiration for Putin and his tough stance on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who faced sharp criticism about two weeks ago when he visited the Oval Office (the U.S. President’s office). Russia invaded Ukraine nearly three years ago.
Trump said that land and power plants are part of the discussions to end the war. “We will talk about land. We will talk about power plants,” he stated.
Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, recently visited Moscow to advance the negotiations. Since launching its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia has illegally occupied four regions: Donetsk and Luhansk in the east, and Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in the southeast. However, Moscow does not have full control over any of them. Last year, Putin listed the withdrawal of Kyiv’s forces from all four regions as one of his conditions for peace. In 2014, Russia had also annexed Crimea from Ukraine.
